Episode Information

"Any Given Sundae" is the thirteenth episode of the fourth season, and the one-hundred-sixty-second episode of The Loud House.

Plot[]

Lily hears the parents mention ice cream if the kids are good, so she uses baby smarts to avert sibling disasters.

Synopsis[]

Lily walks into the kitchen at morning, and as she plays with her toy keys, Rita is about to head off to work to deal with Flip's wisdom teeth having grown back. Before she leaves, she and Lynn Sr. realize that the kids have been good this whole week, and as a reward for their good behavior, they're planning to take them to Auntie Pam's Parlor for ice cream. When Lynn Sr. tells Lily about this trip, she realizes that this could be the perfect opportunity for her to taste ice cream for the first time. However, Lily also hears that, if nothing bad happens today, they'll consider taking them out for ice cream.

Later, Lily holds a sibling meeting in order to tell her siblings about wanting her first ice cream, but the siblings are unable to understand what Lily is saying and come to conclusion that she called the meeting just to wave at them. When the siblings leave, Lily discovers numerous toys littered throughout the hallway, and when she hears Lynn Sr. about to come out of the bathroom, she fears that her father will trip. Acting quick, Lily knocks the toys out of the way, and saves Lynn Sr. just in time. Walking into the kitchen, Lily sees Lincoln mopping the floor, when suddenly, Lincoln leaves in order to help Clyde with an emergency. With the floor still wet, Lily proceeds to slide back and forth across the kitchen floor, using her diaper to soak up the water. At that moment, Lily discovers three things happening: Lana and Lola are fighting over the TV remote (Lana wants to watch a penguin show and Lola wants to watch a pageant show), Lynn is about to charge downstairs with a football, and Luan is about to prank someone with a retractable glove. Fearing that these events will harm their mother, Lily quickly uses Charles and Walt's help to avert all three disasters by finding a show about penguin pageants for Lana and Lola, using Luan's prank against herself, and using the glove to tackle Lynn. Entering the house, Rita announces to the kids that because they were well-behaved this week, they're taking them out for ice cream, much to everyone's, especially Lily's, happiness.

As the family prepares to leave, Lily sees a commercial for Auntie Pam's Parlor and learns that because the parlor wants to give its scoopers more time to relax, they're closing the store at 5:00, which is half an hour from then. Driving off, Lynn Sr. activates the GPS, and says that they should arrive just before 5:00. Suddenly, the family gets caught in a traffic jam, which would delay their arrival. Acting fast, Lily begs to use the phone and successfully finds a shorter route. Unfortunately, they are then pulled over by an officer due to expired registration. Lily prevents them from losing any more time by slinging a block at the kickstand on the officer's motorcycle to send it rolling down the street and the officer runs after it, allowing them to reach their destination just in time. At the parlor, the kids eat their ice cream and Lily begs for a sundae. With her sundae at hand, Lily is about to taste her very first ice cream. Unfortunately, as the family eagerly watches, a bird suddenly swoops down and knocks the sundae out of her hands, causing it to fall to the ground. The family attempts to get another sundae, but the 5:00 closing time has passed. This causes Lily to start wailing in despair and her family immediately feeling sorry for her.

As the family sadly heads back home, Lily discovers Flip's Food & Fuel and begs to go there. When her family is unable to understand what she's saying, she soils her diaper, prompting Rita to turn around. After Lynn Sr. changes Lily, Lily jumps onto the ice cream freezer, giving Lincoln an idea.

The siblings (and Flip, who's still recovering from his wisdom teeth surgery) step in and create a sundae all for Lily, complete with gummy bears, whipped cream, cookie crumbs, chocolate syrup and a cherry on top. With her homemade sundae at hand, Lily finally gets to taste ice cream for the first time. She takes a spoonful, and stuffs it into her mouth, the taste filling Lily to the brim with wonder and excitement. As the family heads back home, Lisa theorizes that Lily had planned this all along and Lynn Sr. believes that she couldn't have done that, since she is just a baby, prompting Lily to give a subtle wink to the viewers.

pugavida One of my favorite @theloudhousecartoon episodes airs today! I really love @david_e_king art style (even though he’s an a**hole) loved how wacky he drew the Loud kids and would love to see them animated on the show one day. When I read the script, there were some Lily’s fantasy scenes in it, I right away knew this was the episode where we can use his style, so I ran into Kyle’s Office and pitched to have all of Lily’s fantasy in the David King Style. He loved the idea and so did everyone else. I hope everyone loves it too. I would love to see an entire episode in this style. • According to Miguel Puga, when he read the script for this episode and saw that there were going to be fantasy sequences included, he convinced Kyle Marshall to incorporate David King's drawing style into these scenes, because of how King's crude/rough drawing style of the family would be fitting for those moments. Kyle Marshall and the rest of the staff loved the idea and agreed to go with that plan. He wishes that one day, there will be an episode completely done in King's style.
    • He also considers this episode to be one of his favorites.
  • According to this episode, the Loud kids trying out ice cream for the first time is considered a momentous occasion.
    • This episode also implies that the Loud children have all been introduced to ice cream by their parents (or in Lincoln's case, Lori[2]).
  • This episode reveals that Lana likes to watch shows about penguins.
  • If one were to notice, Luna's crudely drawn image has her wearing a safety pin instead of a paperclip as an earring.
  • When Luan punches herself with her spring-loaded boxing glove, there is a "POW" onomatopoeia, referencing the comic theme of the show.

JM: What episode did you submit for the Emmy category this year and why?

KM: We submitted Any Given Sundae which is a Lily centric story. We rarely use her as the focal point because she doesn’t fully talk …yet. That said, we had a ton of fun with design on this one and it was fun to see the world through her eyes.

  • This episode was selected by the staff for the Daytime Emmys in 2020 and was nominated in the category of Outstanding Children's Animated Series, its second consecutive nomination in the category after winning for "Really Loud Music" in 2019.
  • According to Rita, Flip has grown multiple sets of wisdom teeth.
  • According to the promotional video "Firsts with Baby Lily", this is the first time Lily has ever ridden on Charles. She would later ride him again in "A Star is Scorned" and "Schooled!".
  • This is the last episode to be written by Sheela Shrinivas.
  • Irony: Upon learning that Auntie Pam's Parlor was closing at 5:00 on Friday rather than 8:00, Lynn Sr. mentioned that they should have advertised this earlier, not knowing that they did mention it in their commercial when Lily tried to warn him about their hours changing.

References[]

  • Any Given Sundae - The title of this episode references the 1999 sports drama film Any Given Sunday.
  • Sleeping Beauty (ballet) - The background music that plays during Lily's dream sequence is "The Garland Waltz", a melody composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for this ballet, and by extension, the song "Once Upon a Dream" from the 1959 animated Disney film Sleeping Beauty.
  • Beauty and the Beast - The teapot that appears in Lily's dream sequence strongly resembles the character Mrs. Potts from this 1991 animated film.

Errors[]

S1E04B Younger sisters eating ice cream

Tell me, what is Lily eating here in this pic from three seasons ago?

  • Possible plot hole: This episode claims that Lily has never had ice cream before (at least until this episode), but in "A Tale of Two Tables", Lily is seen eating what appears to be a sundae at the kiddie table.
    • It is possible that this episode may take place before the aforementioned one, though.
    • It could also be something else, as it is largely obscured by Lisa's head.
  • Lily is shown with a full set of teeth in some scenes.
  • When Lana and Lola are fighting, Luna's hand and Walt's wing are seen in the fight cloud, despite the fact they weren't there.
  • When Lily got her ice cream sundae from the parlor, the spoon was on the left side of the sundae, but when Lily tried to take her first bite of her sundae, the spoon switched to the right side. Also, Lynn wasn't present when the sisters & Lincoln are cheering for Lily.
  • At the end of the episode, if you look closely in the last shot, Leni's eyes are missing.
  • When the family cheers after Lily found the emergency 20 dollars, Leni's mouth doesn't move.
