Tired of the yearly cheer surrounding her birthday, Lucy casts a spell so her family will forget what day it is.
Synopsis[]
At the Royal Woods Cemetery, the Mortician's Club, now with Bertrand back, attempt to cast a spell to go to the Underworld. When the spell doesn't work, Lucy bemoans to her fellow members that tomorrow is her 9th birthday. Aside from the dread of making the occasion a happy one, Lucy reveals that her family has a certain tradition they like to follow when it comes to their birthdays:
First, they loudly wish her a happy birthday the second she wakes up.
Second, they have her wear a birthday sash (which has never been washed at all).
Third, they all bounce in a bounce house Lynn Sr. bought on clearance.
Lastly, they all get dinner at Jean Juan's French Mex Buffet, and sing "Happy Birthday" to her twice (first, in English, then in French).
Not wanting to suffer through all that again, Bertrand reveals that there's a spell in his spell book called the Birthday-Be-Gone Spell, which has the ability to wipe out the birthday from everyone's minds. When Bertrand reveals that the spell must be done before sunset, Lucy quickly hurries home so she can cast it.
At the Loud House, before the Louds can eat dinner, they discover that Lucy had brought the dinner table outside. Lucy says that, because it's her birthday tomorrow, she wanted to celebrate early by eating outside and having a slam poetry session, which is actually a front for her wanting to cast the Birthday-Be-Gone Spell before sunset. Before she can cast the spell, she tries to make sure that every family member is present, and that any and all distractions are taken care of. With everyone finally in place, Lucy casts the spell, and says that only until the next day will she know if the spell worked.
The next day, Lucy wakes up and when she asks Lola if there's anything special going on today, Lola doesn't mention her birthday, making Lucy realize that the spell worked. Upon entering the kitchen, Lucy is given a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Suddenly, she remembers how, during her last birthday, Lynn Sr. made her ghost-shaped pancakes. Later, Lucy decides to watch The Vampires of Melancholia, when suddenly, she remembers how during her last birthday, Lincoln decided to watch alongside her. Later, while reading a book outside, a spider arrives, making Lucy remember how, during her last birthday, Lana gave her a full jar of spiders as a present. Because of all these memories, Lucy immediately regrets casting the spell on her family. Later, while at the cemetery, Lucy admits to her Mortician's Club members that she wants to undo the spell, saying that she was so focused on the bad aspects of her birthday, she forgot about the good ones. Looking through his spell book again, Bertrand discovers that there's the Birthday-Be-Back Spell, which can undo the effects of the Birthday-Be-Gone Spell. Unfortunately, the spell must be cast before sundown, and the Louds are out doing activities. Luckily, the Mortician's Club agrees to help her gather her family.
After gathering everyone back to the Loud House, Lucy quickly attempts to cast the Birthday-Be-Back Spell. After casting the spell, Lucy is happy to discover that the spell worked, as everyone remembers it's her birthday again. With this knowledge, the family proceeds to initiate their usual birthday rituals, like getting the sash, the bounce house, and going to Jean Juan's for dinner.
Prior to its official airdate of September 28, 2023, this episode accidentally premiered on Nicktoons at 9am EST on September 18.
This makes it the first episode of The Loud House to premiere on Nicktoons before Nickelodeon, and the second episode of the franchise to do so, after The Casagrandes episode "Lalo Land".
His tan is shown to have worn off since he left the cruise ship to live with his aunt Madeline.
Coincidentally, Lucy also mentions the episode's title after realizing all of the memories of her past birthdays that she enjoyed.
As of this episode Lucy is now nine years old.
This confirms that she was still eight years old throughout Seasons 5-6 and all preceding episodes of Season 7, making her the fourth character confirmed not to have aged up during the gap between "Coupe Dreams" and "Schooled!", after Lana, Lola, and Lincoln.
This episode reveals the following:
Due to being isolated from the Morticians' Club for so long, Bertrand's spell-casting skills have become rusty.
Every year, the Loud family celebrates Lucy's birthday in the same way. Their normal traditions include:
Waking her up with typical surprise party elements, including balloons, confetti, and noisemakers.
Forcing her to wear the traditional Loud family birthday sash, which has been used for all of the kids' birthdays and also has never been washed before.
Using a bouncy castle that Lynn Sr. bought when it was on clearance, which has previously been used for many of the kids' other birthdays.
Judging from the pen ink on the castle's banner, the bouncy castle seems to have been used for the twins' sixth birthday (since it was not used in "Strife of the Party"), Lincoln's eleventh birthday (since it was not used in "Present Danger"), and Lily's second birthday.
Interestingly, the castle has only been used for the younger kids' birthdays (sans Lisa), and given how Lincoln mentions that he did not have a bounce house at his seventh birthday party in "The Whole Picture", it was likely bought around the time of the twins' sixth birthday.
Taking her to Jean Juan's French Mex Buffet for a birthday dinner. Luna sometimes makes the restaurant staff sing the happy birthday song in French.
Lynn does not understand the concept of slam poetry.
Lola gets a mani-pedi every week.
On one of Lucy's birthdays, Lynn Sr. made ghost-shaped pancakes for her breakfast and dressed as a ghost while serving them.
On another one of her birthdays, Lincoln joined her to watch Vampires of Melancholia and gathered a list of fan theories about the series to debate, one of which regards Tristan being a shapeshifter.
Lucy's favorite birthday present is a jar of spiders she got from Lana.
Mr. Grouse can play the bagpipes.
Lucy's normal body temperature is 62°, according to Lisa.
Lucy's attempt to make her family forget about her birthday is similar to her attempt to get rid of their voices in "Spell It Out".
Unlike in "Spell It Out", where the cause for the Loud siblings losing their voices was actually due to them cheering on Albert, Lucy's birthday-forgetting spell functionally worked in this episode.
Leni insisting to Gavin that he hang up first is similar to the comic "No, You Hang Up" from There Will Be Chaos, which was about Lori and Bobby insisting to each other that they hang up first.
The French lyrics to the happy birthday song in Lucy's flashback to her dinner at Jean Juan's are bon anniversaire à toi.
Judging by the green leaves on the trees, Lucy's birthday is known to have occurred in the spring or summer.
Prior to this episode's airing, an interview with Catherine Ashmore Bradley and Aubin Bradley dated November 26, 2021 (the premiere date of A Loud House Christmas) stated that Lucy was born on Halloween.[1] However, this statement was likely a joke made to reference her gothic character, and it is further confirmed not to be true by Lucy not celebrating her birthday in "Tricked!" or "Great Lakes Freakout!".
This marks the second time Boris joins a group of performers without the rest of the Morticians' Club, after he joined the cheerleading squad in "Ghosted!".
This is the first episode to fade in from a black screen after the title card. This happens again in "A Dish Come True".
Innuendo: The crowd on the Gigglin' Geezer refuses to laugh at Morpheus' joke about gates on cemeteries because the punch line is "People are dying to get there", which could be interpreted as dark because many elderly people die of natural causes.
Irony: Despite Lucy hating her family's birthday traditions, she made a few enjoyable memories on some of her past birthdays that caused her to regret casting the birthday-forgetting spell.
Cartoon physics: A spider winks at Lucy. In real life, arachnids do not have eyelids and aren't capable of closing their eyes.
References[]
Bye Bye Birthday - The title of this episode is likely a reference to the 1963 romantic comedy film Bye Bye Birdie.
Errors[]
The word female for the Female Waitress is misspelled in the credits as "Gemale."
Possible: In the flashback of Lucy's birthday dinner at Jean Juan's, the birthday cake has three candles on it, despite the fact that everybody retains their current appearance and Lily and Lisa are with the Loud family. However, it is possible that the flashback is not to Lucy's third birthday since the amount of candles on the cake is not necessarily meant to be a concrete number corresponding to the celebratee's age.
During the flashback of Lincoln watching Vampires of Melancholia with Lucy, his top hair is detached from his side hair.
Plot hole: Like with other birthday-themed episodes, the date is never revealed.
When Lucy grabs Leni to take her back outside, Lucy's hand overlaps Leni's arm.
In Lucy's Flashback where she, along with her siblings are seen in the bounce castle, everybody was seen bouncing with their shoes on, despite the fact that in real life, removing one's shoes is important as keeping their shoes on could cause puncture wounds on the Bounce castle.
