Episode Information

"Crown and Dirty" (originally titled "Pageant Mom" and "Crown and Out") is the thirty-fourth episode of the sixth season, and the two-hundred-eightieth episode of The Loud House.

Plot[]

Lola tries to whip Mom into tip-top pageant condition for a mother-daughter pageant.

Synopsis[]

In the living room, Lincoln and Luna are trying to find something interesting to watch on TV. When they change to one channel featuring Dana Dufresne, Lola suddenly arrives, sensing Dana's voice. Dana announces that she's going to be hosting an upcoming mother-daughter pageant. Lincoln and Luna encourage her to join with their mother, but Lola refuses, saying that Rita isn't exactly pageant material and is afraid that she'll ruin her pageant reputation. Lola also learns from Lincoln and Luna that Rita has been inserting herself into her kids' hobbies lately, making her tell them to make sure their mom doesn't hear about the pageant.

Sometime later, Lola is happy to know that Rita hasn't found out about the pageant and the entry window will close in a few minutes. Unfortunately, Rita learns through Leni about the pageant, and eagerly says that she would love to join Lola for the pageant. Realizing she can't get out of her situation after Leni offers to help them sign up, Lola proclaims that she must get her mother into top form if they want to win.

Lola tries to train her mother for the pageant...

S6E18B Rita gets stuck in the swing set

But it doesn't go so well.

Later, Lola proceeds to train her mother on how to be a proper pageant contestant. First, she tries to help her perfect her pageant strut, but Rita is unable to keep up at the speed Lola instructs her to follow. Second, Lola tries to teach Rita how to perfect a ribbon dance routine (after Lola shoots down Rita's suggestion of doing a tap dance performance they did during her preschool years), but Rita's ribbon ends up getting snagged on a swing set. Because of these failures, Lola bemoans to her dolls that she has no chance of winning the pageant with Rita. At Mr. Sprinkles' "suggestion", Lola decides to "dump" Rita and find a replacement mother. In the dining room, as Rita suggests buying leopard-print jumpsuits for her and Lola, Lola arrives and cries over "learning" that the pageant has been cancelled. Lola's performance ends up being so convincing, Rita falls for the lie.

Later on, Lola is at the mall, trying to find someone who could be her replacement mom. First, she suggests Mimi Hunnicut, but is turned off from her after seeing her trying to bathe Virginia in the fountain. Second, she suggests a roller-skating woman, but due to not looking where she's going, she ends up falling into a garbage bin. Lastly, she suggests Mrs. Johnson, since she's doing yoga, but due to her age, she can only hold her balance for so long. As Lola is about to leave, unable to find her replacement mom, Mrs. Bernardo suddenly arrives, and Lola sees that she's the perfect fit. Lola approaches her and asks if she would like to pretend to be her mom for an upcoming pageant, and Mrs. Bernardo agrees.

After a montage of Lola successfully training Mrs. Bernardo into becoming pageant girl material, the two arrive to the pageant hall, ready to dominate the competition. As Lola looks around, she discovers that none of the other girls are concerned in the slightest whether they win or not. As she questions why no one is at each other's throats, Lindsay Sweetwater and Claudette arrive to tell her that because it's a mother-daughter pageant, the most important thing is that they have fun with their moms. This makes Lola realize that she was wrong to "dump" her mother, as she let the idea of winning get to her head. Mrs. Bernardo, having overheard her plight, tells Lola that she should go to her house to make things right, to which Lola does. Running back to the Loud House, Lola confesses to Rita that she lied to her about the pageant being cancelled, saying she only told her that because she was afraid that she would be a hindrance to their chances of winning. Rita expresses disappointment that she was lied to, but acknowledges that she at least apologized. When Lola asks if she would still like to be in the pageant with her, Rita agrees if she could find something they could wear.

S6E18B Rita and Lola hug again

Lola realizes that she's happier spending time with her mom than winning the pageant.

Back at the pageant, Lola and Rita decide to do the tap dance performance Lola initially refused to do. Despite the crowd finding it adorable, they end up not winning after all, but Lola doesn't mind, saying that having fun with her mother is all that matters. As Lola and Rita hug, Lola's moment of joy is cut short after Rita reveals that she bought them the leopard-print jumpsuits after all.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode confirmed to have its title changed twice.
  • This is the last episode to be storyboarded by Butch Datuin.
  • Lincoln appears on the title card as a patch of dirt on the lower left portion of Lola's hair.
  • This is the first episode where Lindsay Sweetwater speaks while onscreen visibly.
    • She first spoke in "A Tattler's Tale", but only her eyes were visible (as she was hiding in a dark room), and her first full physical appearance was in "Fool Me Twice", but she didn't speak in that episode.
      • Interestingly, this episode depicts her as a brunette, while it was shown in previously released media that she's a redhead.
  • This episode marks Agnes Johnson's first instance of speaking since "Stall Monitor".
  • This episode reveals the following:
    • According to Luna, Rita has a habit of trying to get herself involved in her kids' hobbies. She once played the tambourine during one of the Moon Goats' performances, and made Lincoln include a two-hour long homework scene in his latest David Steele film.
    • Rita knows how to tap dance.
    • Lola knew how to tap dance since she was in preschool.
    • Lola heavily dislikes leopard print.
    • Mimi tends to bathe Virginia in the mall's fountain.
  • Luna's mention of Rita playing the tambourine could possibly be a reference to her playing said instrument during her family band's performance in "House Music".
  • This was the last episode which premiered during the run of The Casagrandes to not premiere on the same day as a Casagrandes episode.
  • Irony:
    • At first, Lola was opposed to the idea of performing a tap dance at the pageant, but in the end, she made the ultimate decision to have it be her and her mother's performance.
    • When Lola claims that her perfect replacement mom isn't just going to burst through the mall's doors, she was immediately proven wrong when she sees Mrs. Bernardo being the perfect fit for her.
  • Foreshadowing: As Lola predicted, her and Rita's tap dance performance wasn't going to win them the competition.

References[]

  • Crown and Dirty - The title of this episode is a pun of the phrase "down and dirty," which means to be highly competitive and unprincipled.
  • Spider-Man - Lola's "pageant senses" tingling when she hears pageant-related news and "gossip senses" tingling when she hears gossip is similar to this superhero character's "spidey-senses", which is his main method of knowing that there's danger nearby.

Errors[]

S6E18B Lola's wavy disconnected hand
  • When Rita laughs after coming back from the grocery store, her lipstick is missing.
    • Also, Rita has toilet paper stuck to her foot, which was not there when she entered the house.
  • When Lola shows Rita how to wave during the pageant, in one frame, Lola's hand is disconnected.
