"Dollars and Scents" is the fifteenth episode of the eighth season, and the three-hundred-forty-eighth episode of The Loud House.
At Reininger's, Miguel is putting on the finishing touches on his perfume display for a perfume he's trying to sell called Swell. Unfortunately, the sale of his perfume proves to be unsuccessful, as everyone who tries it is repulsed by its scent. When Cheryl and Meryl become revolted by its smell, Leni walks by, and the Farrell twins express their satisfaction with the perfume Leni is wearing. Getting an idea, Miguel asks Leni if she would like to join him in his perfume venture, to which she agrees.
The next day at the Loud House, Leni and Miguel are working together to create their new perfume. Miguel asks Leni what she was wearing yesterday, and as she lists off the ingredients, Miguel adds pieces of them to his test tube. However, their concoction doesn't have quite the scent yet. Miguel encourages Leni to really think about what that missing ingredient could be, and as Leni tries to concentrate, a loose drop of sweat falls into the tube, and it proves to be the missing ingredient, as the concoction emits a lovely scent. Having perfected the recipe, the two decide to call their new creation "Lenergy", and once they start selling it, it proves to be wildly successful, as they quickly sell out. Impressed with the sales of the new perfume, Ms. Carmichael states that she would like to place an order. Leni and Miguel think it'll be a simple order, only for Ms. Carmichael to say that she wants 10,000 bottles.
The premise of this episode is similar to that of "Cow Pie Kid", as both involve a person overworking someone else to meet their expectations due to them having the key to their success.
Innuendo:
Ms. Carmichael tells Miguel that when the creator of Smells like Jean Spirit failed to meet the demand for his scent, he lost his credibility and became "kaput". As she explains this, she makes a motion with her hands that resembles slicing off her own head, implying that the scent's creator committed suicide or got killed by angry customers that mobbed against him.
When Miguel shows the heat lamp to Fiona, Fiona worryingly notifies him that Leni is "at the hospital." Out of concern, Miguel then immediately heads to the hospital to check up on Leni and finds a heavily-bandaged Ms. Carmichael whom he thinks is Leni, before an unharmed Leni reveals herself to be giving Ms. Carmichael flowers. These scenes are intentionally framed to suggest that Miguel's desperate attempts to get Leni to sweat caused her to be hospitalized due to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Irony: Miguel's initial perfume, Swell, has such a revolting scent, it drives people away. He would later use that to his advantage to drive away the rioting crowd after he and Leni run out of Lenergy during their initial run.
Foreshadowing: Two hints that prove that it was Ms. Carmichael who was all bandaged up at the hospital is that the eyelids are grayish-blue, which is the color of her eyes behind her glasses, and that the head shape is noticeably much slimmer than Leni's.
References
Dollars and Scents - The title of this episode is a pun of the expression, "dollars and cents", which describes something expressible in terms of money, sales or profits.
Nirvana - The name of the perfume Smells like Jean Spirit is a pun on this rock band's 1991 song "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
In 1994, the lead singer of the band Kurt Cobain died by suicide, coincidentally similar to the possible aforementioned fate of the creator of Smells like Jean Spirit.
Tears for Fears - The name of Miguel's new perfume, Cheers for Tears, is a pun of his English pop rock band.
