Episode Information

"Europe Road Trip: Nonna Your Business" is the tenth episode of the eighth season, the three-hundred-forty-third episode of The Loud House, and the second episode of the Europe Road Trip story arc.

Plot[]

The Louds journey to Naples, Italy to taste the world's best pizza, made by a secretive and legendary chef.

Synopsis[]

On the next stop of their European road trip, the Louds arrived in Naples, Italy to meet up with Gus's pen pal, a woman named Nonna Viola, who was expecting them due to Gus mentioning them in one of his letters. The Louds came to try out Nonna's famous pizza, and after taking one bite, the family imagines themselves in a fantasy landscape of pizza and say that this is the best pizza they've ever had (and also making Leni speak Italian for the rest of the episode). After pleading with her to give them the recipe, Nonna agrees, but tells them they would have to wait until tomorrow due to running out of ingredients.

The next morning, Nonna gives the Louds their instruction for gathering the ingredients.

  • The first ingredient is gathering wheat for the dough and while it seems easy at first, they are suddenly attacked by an elderly man firing meatballs and cannoli at them. Lynn intercepts the food by eating them while the family gathers the wheat. Later, after giving Nonna the wheat, she reveals that the man attacking them was Old Man Giacalone, who guards her wheat field and forgot to tell him about the Louds.
  • The next ingredient to obtain is a special type of tomato that only grows on the side of a cliff. After Lynn Sr. (who was chosen to gather them) manages to obtain them, he throws them to his family, but Lynn, who catches it, accidentally throws them to the ground like a football, prompting the family to find another tomato plant.
  • For the final ingredient, the family needs to get milk from Nonna's cow, Burrata, but she warns them that Burrata doesn't like tourists. After Lana's failed attempt to talk to Burrata, Lynn Sr., after seeing a cowbell on Burrata's neck, gets the idea of playing a melody with a set of cowbells which not only calms Burrata down, allowing Lana to milk her, but also puts some of the kids to sleep (as he used to do this to put them to sleep when they were younger).

With all the ingredients collected, Nonna tells them that they can start cooking right away, only to remember that she forgot one thing: a flat stone from the top of Mount Vesuvius to cook it on. Unwilling to give up with all the progress they've made so far, the family decides to risk accomplishing this task if it means getting to eat more pizza. After scaling the volcano, the family finds a good stone to take, but at that moment, the volcano erupts (despite Lisa saying that the chances of it erupting were 0%). The family manages to get past the flowing lava and falling boulders, but Lynn, while doing a victory dance for having their stone, accidentally bumps into Lincoln, who drops it, causing it to shatter.

Arriving back to Nonna's, the family tells them that they failed in obtaining the stone because of Vesuvius' eruption, and decide to head home, sad that they'll never have her pizza again. Suddenly, Nonna tells them to follow her to her backroom, revealing that she had all the ingredients this whole time. She states that she never intended to tell the family her recipe, as it's a closely guarded secret to her family, but after seeing how determined they were in helping her, she decided to break her rule this one time. Soon enough, the family is hard at work making their own pizza while Lynn Sr. and Burrata provide pizza-making cowbell music.

Cast[]

Old Man Giacalone has no lines in this episode.

Trivia[]

  • This episode reveals the following:
    • Gus has a pen pal known as Nonna Viola who lives in Naples, and she makes the greatest pizza that he is aware of.
    • Lynn Sr. used to play his cowbell to put his kids to sleep.
  • The message that Gus writes to Nonna Viola reads, "Stanno arrivando i Louds", which translates to "The Louds are arriving".
  • On Nonna Viola's wall of photos:
    • The photo with the robot has binary code that reads "01110000 01101001 01111010 01111010 01100001", which reads as "pizza" when decoded.
    • On Julius Caesar's photo, he writes, "Grazie per le pizze!", which is Italian for "Thanks for the pizzas!"
    • One of the photos is of Keith the snake from "Road Trip: Screen Queen".
    • One of the photos is of Mick Swagger.
  • The premise of this episode is similar to the Casagrandes episode, "Guess Who's Shopping for Dinner?", which is also about the main character(s) going on a citywide scavenger hunt to gather ingredients to make a certain recipe.
  • In real life, eruptions on Mt. Vesuvius can last for more than thirty years.
  • Leni doesn't speak English throughout the entire episode; after tasting Nonna Viola's pizza, she speaks in only Italian.
  • Innuendo: When Lucy pulls out her scythe to harvest wheat, the goat slowly retreats, and when Lincoln tries to ask if she knew the family would be harvesting wheat, she responds with, "Uh... sure", implying that she had more sinister intentions for it.
    • Cartoon Physics: Lucy brandishes the scythe from behind her body.
  • Irony: Lynn Jr. splatting the tomatoes against the ground meant that Lynn Sr., who had become afraid of climbing the cliff because of the distance below him, had to climb back down to retrieve more tomatoes.
  • Foreshadowing: On the map of Europe, Switzerland is indicated with the Alps and the Swiss flag. This ended up being the Louds' destination in the next episode.

Dub facts[]

  • In the Portuguese European dub, starting with this episode and until the end of the season a completely different voice cast is used, with the only actress from the original cast remaining being Paula Pais, who primarily voices Lori. The original cast would eventually return at the beginning of Season 9 in Crystal Ballin'.
    • This was later revealed to be the result of an exchange in dubbing studios as dubbing for Seasons 1 through 8 was handled by 112 Studios while dubbing for Season 9 going forward is being handled by Somnorte. As such, it's very likely that the original voice cast exchanged studios before dubbing for Season 8 was fully completed and 112 Studios was forced to use other actors as replacements to finish their contract of dubbing the Season.

References[]

  • Nonna Your Business - The title of this episode is a pun of the phrase, "none of your business", with "none of" being replaced with "Nonna", the Italian word for "grandmother".
  • Julius Caesar - One of the photos on Nonna Viola's wall is of this former Roman dictator, and she also claims that he was a fan of her family's pizza.
  • Sonny & Cher -The former married American pop and entertainment duo are shown as one of the photos on Nonna's wall.

Errors[]

  • Continuity error: Nonna Viola refers to Gus as "Gustavo". However, in "Love Me Tenor", it was revealed that his real name is Augusto.
  • Plot hole: It is unknown how Lucy brought the scythe from Royal Woods without being caught by airport security, especially since in "A Knight to Remember", Lincoln only cites his David Steele spy gear as the sole reason why the Louds were stuck in security for three hours.
  • Nonna claims that Julius Caesar was a fan of her family's pizza, when in reality he died in 44 BC, while pizza was first created in 997 AD (which didn't get its modern form until 1889).
  • The message Gus sends to Nonna Viola reads, "Stanno arrivando i Louds". In Italian, surnames do not change in the plural form, so the correct way to say it would be "Stanno arrivando i Loud".
    • This is, in fact, how the Italian dub handles their last name.
How is she able to make 13 evenly slices?

How is she able to make 13 evenly slices?

  • Luan's eyebrows returned after being scorched off from the giant flaming boulder.
  • Nonna was able to cut 13 evenly slices of her pizza to the Louds, which is impossible as in real life, evenly slices only can come out to even numbers and not odd numbers.
  • Lynn refers to the plural form of cannoli as "cannolis". In real life, the plural form is the same as the singular.
  • Lynn's bangs are flipped in several scenes:
    • When the Loud family admires the pizza coming out of the oven.
    • When she reacts to Lucy pulling out a scythe.
    • When Leni gets hit by a meatball.
    • When she's stuffed after eating all of Old Man Giaccalone's meatballs.
    • When Lynn Sr gets an idea on how to calm Burrata down.
    • When she bumps Lincoln on Mt. Vesuvius, and when the Loud family reacts to the flat rock's destruction.
