Leonard Loud (more commonly referred to as Gramps) is a minor character in The Loud House. He is the Loud kids' paternal grandfather, father of Lynn Sr. and Lance, and father-in-law of Rita and Sharon.

Biography[]

He may have Scottish heritage.

As revealed in the episode "Home of the Fave" he apparently used to favor Lynn Sr.'s brother, Lance, over him. Despite this, he's very caring towards Lynn Sr. and his grandchildren (whom he refers to as his "little minnows"), and like his sons, he gets very emotional easily. Prior to the events of "Camped" he used to be a fisherman and because of this, he hardly got to see his family. On Leonard's 12th birthday, he received the 1st David Steele comic from his father. He later handed it down to his son, Lynn Sr. for his 12th birthday as well. Every year he'd bring both of his sons with him to cut down a Christmas tree which always ended in disastrous mishaps.

On Lynn Sr.'s wedding day, Leonard passed Vanzilla down to him as a wedding gift.

One Christmas Eve night while his grandchildren were asleep, he participated in a white elephant gift exchange with his sons Lynn Sr. and Lance and daughter-in-laws Rita and Sharon. However, the gift exchange ended disastrously when a fight broke out between his sons leading to them not seeing each other for the following years. Following this, Leonard ended up not seeing his family for the holidays the following years.

Leonard made his full appearance in "Camped!". Lynn Sr. video calls him to tell him about Camp Mastodon closing but is unfortunately cut off due to bad connection. He appears later in the episode and saves the family along with the camp's treasure by catching them on his boat. At the end of the episode he decides to quit his job as fisherman and becomes the new proprietor for Camp Mastodon after Mr. Rinsler retired.

Leonard appears again in "Present Danger" where he attends his grandson's 12th birthday party.

In "Bummer Camp", his employees resign and he nearly closes Camp Mastodon down. His grandchildren show up and try to help him work, but they dislike it due to being made to sleep on his boat, wake up early, fish in cold water, and do chores. They eventually teach him to run the camp in a manner unlike that of a fisherman.

In "'Twas the Fight Before Christmas", Lincoln organises a Christmas get-together at Leonard's cabin, with the goal of making Lynn Sr. and his brother Lance resolve their feud. Leonard is glad to see both his sons, and when the family divides the cabin with a line of paint, he straddles the line to avoid taking sides as requested by both his of sons. Later, Leonard cuts down a tree, and when his sons resolve their argument, he cries happily along with them.

Appearance[]

Leonard is the spitting image of Lynn Sr., except with gray hair and a prominent, bushy beard. He wears an orange parka, brown pants, and light blue sneakers. As a young adult, as shown in flashbacks in "Camped!", his hair and beard used to be brown. In "Leave No Van Behind", it is shown Leonard wears a dark green button up under his parka, white boxer shorts with crabs printed on them, and a belt with the "O" from the front of Vanzilla as its belt buckle. As shown in "'Twas the Fight Before Christmas" in flashbacks of Lynn Sr. and Lance's childhood and teenage years, he wore a yellow parka, grey pants and navy blue boots.

In another flashback where Lynn Sr. and Lance were young adults, he wore an auburn colored parka with white pants and dark grey boots. His beard also started graying as a sign of aging.

In "Vantastic Voyage", he originally appears similar to a 1970s hippie. He has white hair, a white mustache, and goatee. He wears a tan bandana, and circular glasses with purple lenses. He also wears a purple long sleeved shirt, with an orange vest, blue pants, and red sandals. He also wears a peace necklace.

Personality[]

As a result of spending most of his life as a fisherman by trade, Leonard is prone to making fisherman-based remarks in his dialogue, including referring to his grandchildren as his "little minnows". His former career has also caused him to act like a fisherman, even when running Camp Mastodon, though he soon wises up thanks to his grandchildren.

Like his sons Lynn Sr. and Lance, and his eldest granddaughter Lori, Leonard is overemotional and tends to break down sobbing.

Trivia[]

  • Leonard is the first of the Loud family's paternal relatives to make a physical appearance in an episode.
    • He is also the first of Lynn Sr.'s relatives to be confirmed to still be alive.
  • Like Albert, it's unknown if his wife is still alive.
  • "Leave No Van Behind" reveals that he owns a boat-car.
  • As mentioned above, Lynn Sr. believes Leonard played favorites with him and Lance during their youth. "'Twas the Fight Before Christmas" implies Lynn Sr. still believes Leonard does so as he paints a line over him so he wouldn't choose sides with either of them.
