Synopsis[]

S7E09A She probably has a joy buzzer or an ink squirter or maybe even a finger trap

Clyde and Gayle meet their competition.

At Sunset Canyon, Lincoln and Clyde are competing in a grandmother-grandson dance contest with their respective grandmothers. After the contest, Clyde and Nana Gayle are declared the winners, and get to represent Sunset Canyon at the upcoming city finals. The McBrides are ecstatic to compete in this competition, as the grand prize is a pair of brand-new massage chairs. Clyde mentions that if they want to win, they need to beat the representatives of Twilight Towers... who are revealed to be Chandler and his grandmother, Gran McCann. Clyde is initially worried, as he's familiar with Chandler's conniving ways, but Chandler says that he's playing fair, as his grandmother urges him not to pull off any funny ideas for the competition.

A few hours later, the grandmother-grandson dance contest finals are about to begin at the Royal Woods Auditorium. As the Louds and McBrides watch, Mrs. Bernardo, the host and judge of the competition, arrives and explains that there are two rounds: today, the competitors will perform the tango, jitterbug, and Irish clog dance, and tomorrow, they will perform the waltz. After explaining the rules, Mrs. Bernardo officially starts the first round of competition. For each dance, Chandler and his grandmother give off flawless performances, making Mrs. Bernardo give them a perfect 10 every time. However, when it's time for Clyde and Gayle to perform their dance, a major setback occurs, like slipping on oil when doing their tango, getting whacked with a loose floorboard while doing their jitterbug, and falling into a trapdoor while doing their Irish clog. Because of their failed dances, Mrs. Bernardo proceeds to give them a 0 for their performances, but the McCanns argue that they deserve second chances because of outside forces not in their control, only for Mrs. Bernardo to state that do-overs are not allowed, but says that they can still make up for it with their waltz for the second round of the competition tomorrow.

As Clyde and Nana Gayle sit backstage with ice packs, lamenting over their string of bad luck, they suddenly overhear Chandler and Gran McCann saying that they managed to fool the McBrides into believing their story that they were playing fair, and that they were responsible for sabotaging their performances so that they can win the massage chairs for themselves. Realizing that their competitors are playing dirty, Clyde insists that they cheat as well, but Gayle says that it isn't right to stoop to their level, so he instead suggests that they follow them around and catch them in the act so they can prove they're cheating.

Later, Clyde and Gayle spot Chandler going around town gathering supplies, ranging from plastic pipes and sandbags from the hardware store and a colony of bats from the pet store. Back at the auditorium, Clyde and Gayle decide to stay overnight and drink copious amounts of tea so they can stay awake and alert. Unfortunately, the two end up falling asleep anyway, and when the McCanns wake them up the next day, they reveal that they replaced their tea with a different kind of tea meant to aid sleep, thus preventing them from seeing them set up their traps. Now faced with the fact that they have to perform on a rigged stage, Gayle believes they're sure to lose, but Clyde says that, because they know the stage is rigged, they now know what to expect.

Moments later, Mrs. Bernardo announces that it's time for the competitors to perform the waltz. Clyde and Gayle go first, and as to be expected, the numerous traps are set off, like a trapdoor, the pipes, the sandbags, and the bats, but thanks to their knowledge of what's coming to them, the two manage to improvise and use the obstacles to their advantage. However, Chandler, not wanting to give up, proceeds to use his last trap, a giant fan, on them, causing them to lose their footing and fly offstage.

S7E09A It's revealed Trent was pretending to be Chandler's grandmother

A ruse exposed.

Sometime later, Mrs. Bernardo announces that, after the McCanns gave another flawless performance, she declares them the winners. Suddenly, while wheeling away the massage chairs they won, Gran McCann's dress gets snagged and rips, causing a pool floatie to fall off. Suspicious, Clyde turns the fan on and discovers that Chandler's "grandmother" is actually his friend, Trent, in disguise. With their ruse exposed, Chandler admits that his actual grandmother is recovering from hip surgery in Scranton, and that he and Trent only competed in the competition to win the massage chairs. As a result, Mrs. Bernardo declares the McBrides the true winners, and tells Chandler and Trent that they are permanently banned from competing in another dance competition in Royal Woods ever again, then proceeds to kick them off the stage by blowing the fan towards them, causing them to hit a wall, get crushed by sandbags, fall into a trapdoor and get attacked by the bats.

Trivia[]

  • The premise of this episode is similar to that of the Casagrandes episode "Guilt Trip", as they both involve the main characters being finalists in a dance contest facing some tough competition.
  • If one is quick to notice, at the beginning of the episode, Scoots' partner for the grandma and grandson dance contest was a sack of potatoes with a face drawn on it.
    • This implies that she may not have any descendants.
  • This episode marks Myrtle's first appearance without Albert.
  • This episode reveals the following:
    • Lincoln is not strong enough to lift Myrtle over his head.
    • Royal Woods has a retirement home called Twilight Towers, which is where Chandler's grandmother, Gran McCann, resides.
    • Gayle uses mint tea to gain energy boosts.
  • Irony: At first, it seemed like Chandler and Gran McCann were showing signs of good sportsmanship by demanding Clyde and Gayle get second chances when their dances got botched, but this only proved to be a ruse in order to make their sabotage less conspicuous.
  • Foreshadowing: There are a few hints that prove that Gran McCann was actually Trent in disguise:
    • The shape of "her" glasses are the same as Trent's.
    • Gran McCann is about the same height as Trent.
    • Trent and Chandler have previously hung out together[1], to which Clyde acknowledges by calling Trent Chandler's "old partner in crime".
  • This is the first episode where Archer Vattano voices Trent.
  • This episode marks Sunset Canyon Retirement Home's only appearance in Season 7.

References[]

  • Out of Step - The title of this episode is an expression meaning to not follow along with someone else.
  • Frühlingsstimmen - This orchestral waltz song composed by Johann Strauss II is audible when Clyde and Gayle perform the waltz in the last round of the dance competition.

Errors[]

  • Gayle uses mint tea to gain energy boosts, despite the fact that mint tea is naturally caffeine-free.
  • Upon banning Chandler and Trent from ever entering another dance contest in Royal Woods again, Mrs. Bernardo says, "Exit stage left" as she blows them out of the audience's view with a fan. Stage left is a stage direction indicating to the audience's right; the fan actually blew them off the stage in the stage right direction, which is to the audience's left.
