Synopsis[]

S7E07A Everyone, this is Brad

Rita introduces her family to Brad, an old childhood friend.

Continuing on their road trip[1], the Louds arrive to the South West State Fair. After finding a parking spot, the family exits the RV and discover a small crowd gathering at an individual for autographs. Upon closer inspection, Rita realizes that it's Brad Plaid (AKA the Crooning Cowboy), a famous country singer who she actually knew when they used to go to camp together. Seeing how much Rita is getting along with Brad so well, along with being told that he used to be her camp crush, Lynn Sr. immediately grows a seed of jealousy, and very evidently struggles to hide it. Lynn Sr. tries to get his family to hurry along into the fair, but Brad, after revealing that he's on tour with his horse, he offers the family front row seats to his show, and gives them a free album so they can know his songs. As the family enters the fair, Lynn Sr. discovers that all the songs on the album are about Rita, and comes to the conclusion that Brad is trying to steal his crush back from him.

While walking through the fair, Lola spots a stuffed unicorn at one of the game booths and is eager to win one. Lynn Sr., seeing that all he has to do is to knock down milk bottles, steps in to help. However, Lynn Sr. is revealed to have a terrible aim, as he either doesn't throw hard enough, throws in the wrong direction, or doesn't knock down the whole stack (resulting in a meager prize being given). Brad steps in to help, and with just one ball, he succeeds in knocking down every single bottle stack, allowing Lola to win multiple stuffed unicorns. Later, as Brad teaches the family how to square dance, Lynn Sr. tries to stop Rita and Brad from dancing together, but is unsuccessful. As the family continues to tour the fair, Lynn Sr. discovers that there's going to be a cook-off, and decides to challenge Brad. Later, during the cook-off, Lynn Sr. presents a chicken sandwich with a side of macaroni, and while the judge enjoys it, he, along with everyone else (including the other Louds), easily prefer the shish kebabs Brad made. In his anger, Lynn Sr. accidentally squirts ketchup on himself.

While washing himself, Lynn Sr. is approached by Lincoln, who offers him a clean shirt. After Lynn Sr. argues with the shirt (as it has Brad's face on it), Lincoln, realizing that his father believes that Brad is trying to steal Rita from him, tells his father that he's losing it. Suddenly, they hear Brad talking to a cactus (as he's virtually blind without his glasses) revealing that he a seat for Rita on his private jet, and wants her to fly away with him after his concert. Believing that Brad really is trying to steal Rita back, Lincoln says he has an idea on how to stop him.

S7E07A If nothing else, you helped me put on one wild show

Lynn Sr. realizes that Brad wasn't trying to steal Rita away after all.

Later, Lincoln and Lynn Sr., disguised as rodeo clowns, enter the bull pen. Lincoln proceeds to swipe away Brad's glasses, and Lynn Sr. swaps Brad's horse with a ferocious bull named Stomper. After they leave, Brad, unable to tell who he's mounting on, gets on top of Stomper and rides him into the arena. At that moment, Lincoln and Lynn Sr. discover to their horror the concert announcer saying that "Rita" is the name of Brad's horse, meaning that Brad was never referring to the woman. Realizing the danger he put Brad into, Lynn Sr. quickly dons his rodeo clown makeup in order to get Stomper's attention. After ringing his cowbell, Stomper begins charging at Lynn Sr. and rams him towards the entrance of the fair. When his family catches up, Lynn Sr. admits to Rita that he sabotaged Brad performance because he thought he was trying to steal her away from him. When Rita tells her husband that there's no romantic relationship between her and Brad, Lynn Sr. states that he finds it weird that he named his horse after her, only for Brad to state that he actually named his horse after his grandmother, Margarita. Realizing how selfish he acted towards Brad, Lynn Sr. offers his apologies, and Brad, impressed with his cowbell playing, asks him if he would like to perform alongside him for the show, to which Lynn Sr. eagerly agrees.

Later, during the concert, Brad performs his song "Rita Likes Pita" with Lynn Sr. playing his cowbell to a cheering audience, including Stomper.

Trivia[]

  • The premise of this episode is similar to that of the Casagrandes episode "Tee'd Off", as they both involve the main characters believing that their significant other might leave them for another and would try upstage that person in order to win them back, only to learn they made a mistake.
  • This episode reveals that, before Lynn Sr., Rita's first crush was a famous country singer named Brad Plaid, whom she met during camp many years ago.
  • This is the only episode of the Road Trip story arc in which Lori does not have a speaking role.
  • The sound effect for Camperzilla's horn is the same sound effect used for the McBride parents' horn in the Really Loud House episode "Better Together".
  • Irony: Lynn Sr. assumed that Brad's songs about Rita were about his wife and that he was reconnecting with his old camp crush, but he soon learned that he had named his horse Rita (a nickname for "Margarita").

References[]

  • From Brad to Worse - The title of this episode is a pun of the phrase "from bad to worse", which describes something that ends up in an even worse state than before.
  • Brad Paisley - Brad's name is likely a pun on this country singer.
  • Despicable Me - The carnival game scene is similar to a scene in this 2010 animated film where Gru's adoptive daughters play a carnival game that involves knocking down a spaceship with the intent to win a giant unicorn plushie. Like how Edith hit the spaceship but failed to knock it down, thus preventing Gru from winning the unicorn, Lynn Sr. knocked down only one bottle, which was only enough for Lola to win a stuffed mouse. Brad taking the wheel and knocking down every single bottle in one shot is also similar to Gru destroying the carnival stall (and making the spaceship disintegrate) with his lava gun.
  • Kathmandu - The name of the camp Rita and Brad went to, Camp Can Do, is likely a pun on the name of this city, the capital of Nepal.
