Episode Information

"Road Trip: Mountain Hard Pass" is the eleventh episode of the seventh season, the three-hundred-sixth episode of The Loud House, and the third episode of the Road Trip story arc.

Plot[]

Intimidated by an intense day of hiking in the Rocky Mountains, the Loud kids try to find reasons to call off the hike.

Synopsis[]

Continuing on their road trip[1], the Louds arrive to the state of Colorado, as Rita's next piece on the travel article is on the Rocky Mountains. She also reveals that she wants to take the kids on a 10-mile hike through the mountains. However, the kids, having spoiled themselves with all the amenities of living in an RV, are not interested, and would rather stay. Lynn Sr. tries to convince them to join the hike, wearing Lincoln's "convincing suit", and Lincoln, convinced, asks how bad it could be.

S7E06B The kids are exhausted from the hike

Hiking through the Rocky Mountains isn't so enjoyable.

Soon enough, the kids are completely exhausted from the hike, having to deal with the constant weather changes, the bugs flying around them, the obstacles of nature itself and having no phone connection. On the other hand, Rita and Lynn Sr. are having the time of their lives as they hike with stride. Unable to take it anymore, the sisters ask Lincoln if he can convince their parents to call off the hike, and Lincoln states that he can't use his suit (as Lynn Sr. stretched it out), but he still has an idea.

As the Louds continue on their hike, the kids initiate their plan to convince their parents to go back to the RV. Lucy "accidentally" drops the backpack containing their food into the raging river, and despite their "effort" to get it back, it ends up washing away. However, this doesn't convince Rita and Lynn Sr. to go back, as they decide to forage for whatever berries they can find. As the family picks off berries from the bushes, Lincoln, after witnessing Lana drench Lola in berry juice, gets another idea. This time, Lola pretends to have gotten rashes from poison oak and tells her parents that they need to head back so she can "cure" herself. However, Rita instead creates an all-natural cure for poison oak, consisting of herbs, spring water, and squirrel excrement. Upon hearing that last ingredient, Lola, after letting out a bloodcurdling scream from having literal poop rubbed on her, immediately drops her act and proclaims she's better, thus allowing the parents to say that the hike continues. As the family continues their hike, Lincoln discovers a sign warning hikers to be aware of mountain goats, causing him to say that he has one more idea.

As the family hikes up a hill, the kids initiate their plan. After the kids state that they need to use the bathroom, they disperse and go in different directions. Suddenly, Rita and Lynn Sr. hear a thunderous bleat from up ahead, and discover a mountain goat is nearby (which is actually a facade created by the kids). Out of panic, the parents call for their kids and tell them they're calling off the hike because of a mountain goat sighting, muck to the kids glee. As the family rushes back to the RV, they suddenly encounter real mountain goats, having been attracted by the sound of Lynn's bleat. Luna attempts to calm the goats by singing a lullaby to them, but this effort proves to be worthless, as it does nothing to change the goats' demeanor, and they promptly begin chasing the family. The Louds come across a wooden bridge, and despite its worn-down condition, the family proceeds to cross it, as it's their only way to escape. Suddenly, the goats proceed to gnaw away at the ropes holding the bridge together, causing the bridge to collapse with the family still in the middle, forcing them to climb up it like a makeshift ladder. Unfortunately, despite climbing to safety, the family ends up losing their map, and Lisa calculates that their chances for survival given their current status are a measly 5%. When Rita expresses regret of bringing the kids on the hike, the kids ultimately confess that they sabotaged the hike just because they wanted to go back to the RV. Naturally, Rita and Lynn Sr. are angry at their kids, not just for sabotaging the hike, but also for placing them in a life-threatening situation. However, the kids proclaim that, since they're responsible for their situation, they'll get out of it, and decide to use what nature provides to get back.

S7E06B We literally loved it

Everyone truly had fun on the hike after all.

After Lisa determines the proper direction to go after examining the sun's position, they begin their trek back to the RV. Along the way, they encounter several obstacles like needing to get down a rocky cliff, and down a river, but they manage to overcome them by using whatever they could find. However, they're unable to escape a raging waterfall, and as they rush downstream, they steer their log in the right direction. After launching themselves off a beaver dam, the family succeeds in making back to the RV. Rita and Lynn Sr. proclaim that they will never take the kids on another hike, but the kids, after expressing how thrilling their adventure was, state that they love nature now and ask if they can sleep under the stars tonight. Happy that the kids are embracing nature just like them, Lynn Sr. eagerly goes to get the mattresses, but upon opening the door, they discover that the mountain goats have taken residence and, not wanting to tussle with the wild animals, tells the family that they'll just sleep on the ground instead.

Trivia[]

  • Lincoln appears on the title card as the compass rose on the map.
  • This is the first episode since "Silence of the Luans" in Season 5 where the only human characters to appear are part of the Loud family.
  • This episode reveals the following:
    • Rita and Lynn Sr. have made some of their best memories while hiking.
    • Rita knows how to cure poison oak.
    • Lana knows how to communicate with goats.
  • This episode has the first instance of Lincoln being on the receiving end of his convincing suit, as Lynn Sr. wears it to convince the kids to go hiking.
    • Coincidentally, the suit was originally Lynn Sr.'s to begin with.[2]
  • The climax of this episode is similar to the second half of "Roughin' It", as both involve a group of people lost in the woods using the things that nature provides to find their way to their destination.
  • When climbing up the bridge-now-turned-ladder, Lola uses her "beauty before age" excuse so she can go first, making it the first time she used it since the Season 1 episode "The Sweet Spot".
  • Innuendo: Rita mentioning that her all-natural cure for poison oak contains squirrel excrement is enough to make Lola panic and rub all of it off her body in a rush.
  • Irony: The Loud kids staging a mountain goat sighting caused the parents to conclude that they should return to Camperzilla, and they all encountered a herd of real mountain goats on the way back.
    • The chase also caused the Loud family to encounter more serious danger than what the kids had staged earlier.

References[]

  • Mountain Hard Pass - The title of this episode is a portmanteau of the phrases "mountain pass", a navigable path on a mountain range, and "hard pass", an informal way to reject something.
  • Hush, Little Baby - Luna sings her mountain goat lullaby to the melody of this song.
  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - The scene where the Loud family uses the rope bridge as a ladder to escape danger after the mountain goats snapped it in half is similar to a scene in this 1984 action-adventure film where Indy attempts to escape danger from Mola Ram by snapping a rope bridge in half and climbing it like a ladder in order to prevent the undoing of his grand larceny of the Sankara stones.

Errors[]

  • When Lynn Sr. eats huckleberries off the branch, he gets a thorn lodged in his tongue, despite the fact that huckleberry bushes do not have thorns.
  • Possible: Lori claims Lily has a full diaper, even though she became potty-trained in "Schooled!". However, it is possible that she deliberately soiled herself, as it was part of her and her siblings' plan to call off the hike. It may also have been that Lily did not soil herself, but Lori lied that she did.
  • When Lola reports her false case of poison oak rash to Rita, she is not wearing her gloves. However, when she rubs the ointment off her body, her gloves mysteriously reappear after she brushes it all off.
  • Lincoln tells everybody to aim for a beaver dam, but they actually aim for a beaver lodge.
