Hmm, not bad, but I think I like my ending better.

"Tennesee-you-later: A Very Loud Road Trip" was an episode of the second season of The Really Loud House.

Plot[]

It's Thanksgiving and the Louds are driving to Tennessee so Lincoln can surprise his girlfriend, Charlie. But it's never a normal road trip with the Loud family.

Synopsis[]

NOTE: The following synopsis is based on the episode's original script.

Act I[]

It's a few days before Thanksgiving, and Lincoln plans to take the holiday as an opportunity to surprise Charlie on her birthday, which also happens to fall on Thanksgiving Day. He then gets a call from Charlie, but promptly declines it as he walks to Vanzilla, where Lynn Sr. is hanging on top, also excited to travel to Tennessee due to his restaurant has been offered to contribute to the World Famous Let’s Talk Turkey Memphis, Tennessee Thanksgiving Potluck. The rest of the family then hands him their luggage, which he successfully attaches to the roof until Lily throws him her backpack, causing him to lose his balance and putting so much strain on the bungee cords that they break. A while later, after they reload the luggage, they leave for Tennessee. They initially leave behind a cold-stricken Rita, but Lynn Sr. decides to bring her along because he has promised that he would stick with her "in sickness and in health, 'til death do [them] part". While on the road, Lincoln receives another call from Charlie, but he fakes being in a faulty signal zone and hangs up, then explains that for the past few weeks, he has been ignoring all of Charlie's calls as part of his tactic to surprise her. While traveling on the road to Tennessee, they map out several pit stops they intend to make, including for Lynn eating a ten-pound burger in Ohio, Lola pardoning a turkey on live television in Indiana, Leni buying a vintage Isabelle Fanque party coat, Lori scooping dirt from every state they visit to give to Bobby, Lucy confronting the Rings of Doom in Kentucky, and Lana freeing a marmot into the wild in Tennessee. When they arrive at the burger restaurant in Ohio, called Jim McGraw's Eatin' Trough, Lynn successfully eats the 10 lb. burger, but afterwards experiences severe gastrointestinal problems, prompting her to poop for forty-three minutes. When the Loud family prepares to get back on the road, Vanzilla accidentally scratches the sideview mirror of a nearby truck. Lynn Sr. insists on leaving an apology note to make up for it, even though the scratch is barely visible, before driving off. Unbeknownst to him, another car scratches the truck up even more, and the truck's driver, a hunter named Moose, discovers the damage. After reading the apology note and finding Lynn Sr.'s information on the back, he decides to track down the Loud family, using a photo of the family he found outside the restaurant for facial identification.

Act II[]

While on the road in Indiana, the Louds are not enjoying the smell of Leni's vintage Isabelle Fanque coat, which she had picked up back in Ohio. In South Bend, they arrive just in time for Lola to pardon the turkey. However, since she has a forty-five minute speech prepared, Lincoln knows that this will cut into their time on the road, so he, along with Luna, rushes Lola to the end of her speech quickly. After Lola finishes giving her speech, the host, Franklin, orders his staff to send the turkey, named Mr. Gobblesworth, to the slaughterhouse. Alarmed, Lola questions why the turkey is going to get slaughtered, to which Franklin replies that the whole "turkey pardoning" thing was a scam for local consumers, and that he believes Mr. Gobblesworth is better off slaughtered because he is big enough to feed a family of fifteen. Lola quickly distracts him and steals Mr. Gobblesworth to save him from getting killed before the whole family boards Vanzilla, ready to leave Indiana in a hurry before they become wanted criminals for animal kidnapping. However, Lucy is skeptical about taking Mr. Gobblesworth with them, as she has learned "the hard way" that it is illegal to transport feral game birds across state borders, and Lincoln insists that they leave the turkey behind to prevent any more delays. Just then, Moose arrives, prepared to encounter the Louds, but Lola believes that they are actually being followed by officers from the National Giblet Distribution Company. Lincoln then insists that they have no choice but to throw Mr. Gobblesworth out the window, but Lola instead decides that they need to evict Luna's trombone, which has caused annoyance to the others throughout the trip. Lynn Sr. decides that they need to vote on whether to leave behind the turkey or the trombone, but Lynn Jr. quickly throws the trombone out the window. Moose swerves to avoid the flying trombone, but in doing so, he drives off the road. A few hours later, the Loud family has fallen asleep in the van, and some fleas inside Leni's coat escape and infect everyone. Meanwhile, Lincoln is dreaming of the moment he will finally greet Charlie in person, but is quickly snapped out of his dream by Mr. Gobblesworth popping one of the balloons he grabbed for the surprise. Everyone else likewise wakes up, quickly noticing that they have fleas. They begin wondering where the fleas may have come from before deciding that Leni's coat is the source of them. They then form a mob against her, and when they pull over into a parking lot, they attempt to take it away from her while simultaneously trying to scratch off the fleas. While much of the Loud family rallies against Leni, Lucy stands near a sign, confirming that they are in Doomsville, Kentucky, the home of the Rings of Doom. She then prepares herself to conquer the Rings of Doom, which turns out to be a game of ring toss. Annoyed by the pointlessness of the pit stop and the ticking clock, Lincoln suggests that Lynn Sr. hit the road. A while later, Vanzilla runs low on gas, prompting the Louds to make a pit stop at a gas station. Unfortunately, while at the gas station, Moose finally catches up to Lynn Sr. and prepares to punch him as revenge for damaging his truck; however, Lisa intervenes by grabbing him with her whip and handcuffing him to a pole before taking back Luna's trombone, which has become wedged in the grill of his truck. Later on, the Louds arrive in Tennessee, where Lana sets her marmot free. With all of the pit stops complete, Lincoln assumes that enough time is left for the Louds to hurry up and reach Charlie's house. However, while on the way, a spider that had hidden in Lori's Tupperware container and escaped lowers itself onto Lynn Sr.'s nose, freaking him out and causing the van to swerve erratically, catching the attention of the police and getting them pulled over.

Act III[]

Upon getting pulled over by Officer Tryber, Lynn Sr. is immediately charged with speeding, reckless endangerment, and transporting a frog across state borders without a permit. Lincoln, not willing to admit defeat, explains the lengths the Loud family has taken to reach Charlie on Thanksgiving, and that if they don't arrive at her house within fifteen minutes, he will never believe in love again. This touches Officer Tryber's heart and prompts him to give the Louds a police escort to Charlie's house. Upon arrival at the Uggo house, Lincoln calls Charlie on his cell phone while hiding inside a bush near her door. Charlie answers the phone, but just as Lincoln is about to announce his motives for coming, she insists that they break up, as she has a new boyfriend, who comes straight to her house. A heartbroken Lincoln then watches as Charlie and her boyfriend board their car, ready to drive to Aunt Bizzy's house for Thanksgiving. He then boards Vanzilla, disappointed that his efforts to surprise Charlie have been in vain, and insists that the only thing left for them to do is go to Lynn Sr.'s potluck. However, Lynn Sr., touched by Lincoln's disappointment, instead drives all the way back to the Loud house, where Clyde has cooked the exact Thanksgiving feast that Lincoln dreamed about at the start of the trip. The Louds then enjoy Clyde's Thanksgiving dinner, but as they're eating, Lynn Sr. catches a cold from Rita.

Production[]

This episode was originally produced as the fifth episode of the second season. However, due to undisclosed reasons, it was removed from its former production slot and later scrapped; to fill up the production slot, "A Musical to Remember" instead had its two half-hour segments split to occupy the first two production slots of the season, pushing "Nice Guys Finish First", "Get Out of Dodgeball" and "Last Friend Standing" to occupy the other production slots.

A new Thanksgiving episode, "A Really Loud Thanksgiving: The Gobble Squabble Debacle", would be produced at the end of the season to replace this one. It is possible that this episode got re-worked into "The Tennessee Surprise: Love Is in the Air". This is evidenced by some plot elements from this episode being present in the later episode (including alterations):

  • In this episode, Lincoln plans to surprise Charlie on her birthday, which was on Thanksgiving in the episode's original script. It later got reworked into February 26th.
  • To help with the element of surprise, he declines all of Charlie's calls. In this episode, he would have worded the time span as "a few weeks", but this got reworked into one month. In both cases, however, it would have been exactly 28 days (the latter being more fitting because the month of February has only 28 days in a common year, as opposed to the 30 days in November).
    • Lincoln's long-running habit of spoiling surprises was likewise present in this episode's original script. However, instead of spoiling a movie to his sisters, he would have done it to Clyde.
  • The cop who pulls Lynn Sr. over in this episode is Officer Tryber, the same one who pulled over Mr. Bolhofner in the later episode. Lincoln even encourages him not to arrest Lynn Sr. in the same way he does with Mr. Bolhofner.
  • At the end of the episode, Charlie would have revealed that her motives for calling Lincoln were to inform him that she has a new boyfriend.

The plot element of Lola saving a pardoned turkey from being slaughtered was recycled into "A Really Loud Thanksgiving: The Gobble Squabble Debacle", as evidenced by her being crowned Little Miss Giblets and getting the privilege of pardoning a turkey on live television, the company bearing the same name (National Giblet Distribution Company), and their intentions being to slaughter the "pardoned" turkeys, rather than set them free as stated on television.

Cast[]

NOTE: As this episode remains unproduced, the following list is an assumption about which cast members would have been in the episode, had it come to fruition. The list of characters is based on those present in the script.

Guest roles[]

It is unknown who would have portrayed Moose, the Rings of Doom attendant, and Mrs. Uggo. The reporter documenting the pardoning of Mr. Gobblesworth and Charlie's boyfriend are not named in the script; however, it is possible these characters were Chip Winters and Marcus and that they were to be portrayed by Brian Schaeffer and Zane Moyer, respectively.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first (and currently only) episode known to have been fully scrapped from any series in the franchise.
  • At the beginning of Act I, Lincoln grabs some marshmallow mashed potatoes, which may be a reference to Lynn Sr.'s marshmallow-covered potatoes from the Loud House episode "The Loudest Thanksgiving".
  • The script for this episode implies that Charlie's home town is Memphis.
  • Had this episode been canon, it would have revealed the following:
    • Charlie's birthday is in November. (Officially retconned, as "The Tennessee Surprise: Love Is in the Air" establishes her birthday as February 26th.)
    • Bobby works at the mercado so much, he never gets to travel.
    • Lisa usually wears sunscreen on long car rides.
    • Charlie has an aunt named Bizzy.
    • Lynn Sr. prefers to leave apology notes for every potentially alarming mistake he makes because he views it has good karma.
    • Lucy has a criminal record for transporting feral game birds across state borders.
    • Lana does not take Hops on the road very much. Because of this, Lynn Sr. does not have a permit to take frogs across state borders.
  • In this episode, Rita was going to wear a Jim McGraw's Eatin' Trough-branded soda helmet, similarly to the Flippee hat Lincoln wore in "Ro-Bro".
  • In this episode, Lucy would have mentioned that it is illegal to transport feral game birds across state borders. In real life, this only applies to the people who have not hunted the bird in question, unless it is mounted, at which point a permit is required regardless.
  • Lily finding it funny when people fall down is likely a callback to the Loud House episode "Breaking Dad".
  • This episode calls back to the Loud House episode "Along Came a Sister" by showing Lynn Sr.'s arachnophobia.
  • Innuendo:
    • When Luan assumes that her spinning bowtie cheered up an angry driver, she assumes that he's giving her a thumbs-up, only for Rita to point out that he's not raising his thumb, implying that the driver may have raised his middle finger at her.
    • When Lucy looks up at the sign for Doomsville, the population sign reads "999" before a pin falls out, causing it to turn upside down and read "666", implying that 333 of the town's citizens had just died.
  • Irony:
    • Lynn Sr. left an apology note for a minor scratch on Moose's truck, only for another car to scratch it up even more, painting a bigger target on his back than warranted.
    • Lucy insists that the Loud family leave Mr. Gobblesworth in Indiana to prevent the incident from giving them a criminal record. However, Lynn Sr. had already scratched up Moose's truck, which qualifies as vandalism (punishable as a Class B felony) in the state of Ohio.
      • While the Loud family did not get charged for illegally bringing a turkey across state borders, they did end up getting this charge for bringing Hops with them since Lynn Sr. did not have a permit to take frogs across state borders.
    • Despite the dark motifs carried by Lucy being willing to conquer the Rings of Doom in Doomsville, the activity turns out to be a simple game of ring toss.
    • Despite Lily not finding any of Luan's jokes funny, she did end up laughing at her expense when she fell into a hole.

References[]

  • Indiana Jones - Lisa was going to dress up like the titular character of this film franchise created by George Lucas. A pastiche of the main theme was likewise going to play when Lisa faced off against Moose, and Luna would have played it on her trombone after Lisa recovered it.
  • 99 Bottles of Beer - The Loud family was going to sing this folk song on their road trip.
  • John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt - The Loud family was likewise going to sing this folk song on the road trip as well.
  • Tim McGraw - The Loud family was going to stop at a restaurant called Jim McGraw's Eatin' Trough, which is likely a reference to the name of this country singer.
  • National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation - Lola pardoning Mr. Gobblesworth on live television is similar to this annual tradition of U.S. presidents pardoning turkeys.
  • The Great Outdoors - Lynn eating the Ten-Pound Pound-It-Down Burger is similar to Chet Ripley eating the Ninety-Sixer, a 96 oz. (6 lb.) steak, in this 1988 film. The feat likewise comes with a large bib signifying the accomplishment. Chet and Lynn also faced gastrointestinal problems from eating too much meat; however, while Chet vomited in the film, Lynn had diarrhea in this episode.
  • Treulich geführt - Lynn Sr.'s horn would have played this 1850 song (referred to in-script as "Here Comes the Bride") from the opera Lohengrin composed by Richard Wagner.

Product placement[]

  • Kleenex - Rita was going to use this brand of facial tissues.

Errors[]

  • Possible: In the script, Leni was intended to say, "Leni's gross vintage coat!" when the Loud family starts wondering about the source of the fleas. It's likely this line was meant to be assigned to another character.
