Premise[]

After a surprise family trip to Mexico derails Ronnie Anne's birthday plans, she is determined to prove she's old enough to do her own thing – even if it means confronting an ancient preteen demigod whose angst has apocalyptic potential!

Plot Summary[]

Ronnie Anne is celebrating her twelfth birthday. She intends to celebrate her "Summer of 12" at Xtreme Eddie's, a dangerous theme park open to only 12 year olds and older, with her best friend, Sid Chang, but her family surprises her with a trip to Japunda, Mexico, much to her dismay. In Mexico, Ronnie Anne takes interest to a necklace that a shopkeeper claims to hold the last connection between humans and gods, but Maria dismisses it as a hoax. However, Ronnie Anne buys the necklace behind her mother's back.

The family head to Mama Lupe's house, where Ronnie Anne points out a nearby mountain that resembles a half-pipe. Carlos tells her that the mountain is named after the petrified form of the demigoddess Punguari, whose parents denied her from becoming a full-fledged god due to her rebellious nature and lack of responsibility. Dissatisfied, Punguari snuck out and stole a mask that allowed her to become a god; however, the ground around her started to crack and separate. Sisiki, her mother, was forced to petrify her daughter; should Punguari be freed now, Mexico would be in danger.

The next day, Ronnie Anne decides to go to Mount Punguari, where she starts to synchronize skate with Sid via video call. However, Ronnie Anne falls off her skateboard, breaking her necklace and releasing Punguari. Soon, a young girl, who introduces herself as Shara, calls for help, her leg having been trapped underneath a branch following an earthquake. Ronnie Anne, accompanied by Shara, is confronted by her mother, who is angry that she snuck out to do her own thing. Later that evening, Maria expresses her frustration about Ronnie Anne's rebellious nature, prompting Mama Lupe to take her outside to practice her chancla throwing.

Shara and Ronnie Anne sneak away to a museum, where Ronnie Anne uncovers the gateway to the realm holding the mask. Shara, taking the mask, reveals that she is in fact Punguari all along, leaving Ronnie Anne trapped within the realm. However, her grandfather Hector ends up finding her through a magical mirror. Ronnie Anne explains her plight to her family, who sneak into the museum at night to save her. Ronnie Anne realizes that the story of Punguari was wrong: as Punguari wielded the mask, the cracks forming within the ground was allowing another deity - Ucumu, the god of the underworld - to rise up from the ground.

Punguari harnesses the mask's power to make herself a god, draining the sea and creating a temple in its wake. However, the earth starts to crack once more. Ronnie Anne decides to go to Punguari's temple herself, where she confronts Punguari and tells her the true story: her parents petrified her to protect her from Ucumu. They notice that Maria, who tried to get to the temple, is about to slip into the newly-formed cracks. Punguari shapeshifts into a coyote and runs toward Maria, who uses her itinerary to swing herself to safety. The family and Punguari regroup as Ucumu rises from the cracks.

Ronnie Anne rides off with Punguari into battle, while Maria orders Lalo to dig for a giant chancla, and Bobby grabs the sacred flame housed beneath Mama Lupe's house. Bobby's group returns to the mainland as Ucumu summons a group of minions to attack. Lupe's housekeeper, Don Tacho, crashes the plane he was piloting into the minions, taking them out, and each Casagrande utilizes their strengths to fight them off. Punguari is eventually knocked out by Ucumu, who proceeds to drag her into a skull on his mask.

Maria, aided by a group of Chancla Warriors, is able to lift the giant chancla long enough for Frida to knock a paper cutout of Arturo, which is engulfed in the sacred flame, into the chancla, which strikes Ucumu, reducing him into a skeleton. Ronnie Anne fires at Ucumu, destroying him and petrifying all of his minions. Punguari seals the cracks using the temple she built, preventing Ucumu's return, and reunites with her parents, who had been turned into gemstones. Sisiki and Maria reconcile with their respective daughters and put aside their differences.

Punguari's father, Chipiri, restores the mainland back to its former glory, and the Festival of the New Fire is now being held at Mama Lupe's island. Maria presents her daughter with another gemstone as Punguari, Sisiki and Chipiri watch the celebrations from afar.

Trivia[]

Background information[]

  • This film makes The Casagrandes the fifth Nicktoon to receive its first film adaptation after it concluded its broadcast, after Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rocko's Modern Life, Invader Zim, and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • This film makes The Loud House the first Nicktoon franchise to reach four film adaptations (not counting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, which received four film adaptations prior to its acquisition by Paramount Global in 2009; even by the time the franchise received its fourth Nickelodeon-produced film adaptation in 2023, only one of the franchise's Nickelodeon-produced films was directly adapted from a Nickelodeon-produced series).
    • However, if one counts the fact that the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise had its fourth film leaked in Iran prior to its official premiere on Netflix, The Loud House is the second Nicktoon film franchise to reach four films.
  • Prior to the release of this film, Miguel Puga clarified that the human character Ronnie Anne befriends in the film was not named Punguari, despite the strong resemblance between the two. Ultimately, it wasn't until the film came out when the answer was revealed: "Punguari" is the name of the character in her true, demigoddess form, while her human form is called "Shara". [5]
  • This is the first film in the franchise to be released in the first half of a year.
  • This is the first Nickelodeon Movies-produced film in the franchise to not be released in close proximity to a Paw Patrol film.

General trivia[]

  • As of this film, Ronnie Anne is now 12 years old.
  • As this film is focused on the Casagrande family, this is the first film in the franchise to not feature any members of the Loud family or the main cast of The Loud House, although Bobby does mention Lori at the beginning of the film and some of the family members are seen commenting on Carlota's livestream (see below).
    • This is also the first film in the franchise to not feature Brian Stepanek as part of the cast.
  • The premise of this film is very similar to The Loud House's very own film, as they both involve the main family going on a road trip to another country and get in touch with more of their roots, while also having to deal with mythological beings.
  • This film reveals the following:
    • Great Lakes City has a skate park called Xtreme Eddie's Sick and Twisted 12 and Over Skatepark. The park is only open to those 12 and over and, according to Ronnie Anne, there was an incident where one kid scraped off so much of his skin, his spleen became visible.
    • Lupe lives on a hacienda situated on an island in the middle of a lake.
    • Lupe used to play a sport called Fire Ball, which is similar to hockey, but instead of a puck, they use a ball that's on fire. It is also revealed that she has numerous burn marks on her legs as a result of playing the game.
    • The Casagrandes women have a history of being rebellious against their mothers.
      • According to Rosa, Maria once skipped out on school to visit a carnival that was visiting for only one day.
      • According to Lupe, Rosa ran away to live in her family's barn because she wouldn't let her sleep with the donkey in her room.
  • The events of "The Golden Curse" are brought up in this film by revealing that Paco is still married to Paulina.
    • The film also reveals that ever since their marriage, they have adopted numerous birds.
  • The film likely takes place before the events of "Movers and Fakers", as Bobby is shown sleeping in his old room at the start of the film.
  • When Carlota was livestreaming Ronnie Anne's birthday, some of the people who commented consist of Lincoln, Lori, Luna, Clyde and Flip.
    • LULUNA: HBD🤘!!
    • CLYDEOFFICIAL: Happy Birthday.
    • HEYITSFLIP: FREE TIX HERE!!!
    • HEYITSFLIP: tiny.url/QZF23
      • tinyurl.com/QZF23 redirects to a Japanese Amazon listing for the Fumio Nishida 224-page tankobon softcover Tsuki o koeru seikoÌ„ryoku : Anata ga ima yori motto kasegete motto ookikunareru riyuÌ„. This is most likely unrelated to the movie or series.
    • LINC.LOUD: hello?
    • LOR.LOR: HBDRN!!❤️
    • LINC.LOUD: yooooooo
    • LINC.LOUD: lol hi
  • Carl breaks the fourth wall by shouting "We've been waiting for this the whole movie!" when he, CJ and Frida realize they can use their newfound skills in Fire Ball to pass the sacred flame to Maria, Rosa and Lupe.
    CS1E02B Ronnie Anne's big plans
TCM Maria wakes up Ronnie Anne
  • The scene where Maria wakes up Ronnie Anne with her vacation plans is clearly meant to be a direct parallel to Vacation Daze where instead Ronnie Anne is the one who wakes up Maria.
  • Foreshadowing: At the beginning of the film, just before Sisiki petrified Punguari, Ucumu can be seen slowly approaching behind Punguari, proving that Punguari's petrification was not out of punishment, but for her own safety.
  • Innuendo:
    • When Sergio meets Paco and Paulina's adopted children, he remarks, "You guys have been busy," suggesting that Paulina gave birth to them.
    • Lupe reveals that her Fire Ball teammates have died (presumably under the game's hazardous conditions) and scolds them by calling them a "bunch of quitters".

References[]

  • SpongeBob SquarePants and Rocko's Modern Life - While trying to find the realm that holds the Mask of Many Faces, Punguari stumbles upon Bikini Bottom and O-Town, the main settings of these Nickelodeon cartoons respectively. Pungiari describes Bikini Bottom as "too wet" and describes O-Town as "too modern".
    • Also, one of the masks on the pillar holding the Mask of Many Faces resembles SpongeBob.
  • Rugrats - One of the masks on the pillar holding the Mask of Many Faces resembles that of Reptar, the dinosaur character from this Nickelodeon cartoon.
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul - Arturo sending a flat version of himself with the Casagrandes on their trip is similar to the Heffley family bringing Flat Stanley on their road trip in this 2014 book by Jeff Kinney.
  • Ronniecoln - When Ronnie Anne is finding some music to dance to, one of her playlists is titled "Ronniecoln," referring to this fandom's nickname for the Lincoln Loud–Ronnie Anne Santiago relationship.

Errors[]

  • When Punguari arrives to the portal holding the Mask of Many Faces, she inserts Chipiri's staff into the keyhole that activates it, but when she rejects SpongeBob's world, she is shown to be holding it, and when she finds the right portal, the staff is back in the keyhole.
